Most travelers assume they need to stay overnight in Alishan but for us, staying in Chiayi made more sense.

Chiayi is the main gateway to Alishan, making it a very practical base if you’re planning a DIY Alishan day trip. From here, you’ll have easy access to the Alishan Forest Railway and buses going up the mountain, without paying the higher cost of accommodations inside Alishan.

Another reason we chose Chiayi is the variety of food and dining options. Compared to Alishan, Chiayi has more night markets, cafés, and local restaurants. Perfect for ending the day after coming back from the mountains. If you’re visiting Chiayi, don’t miss Turkey rice, a local specialty that’s delicious, affordable, and widely available around the city. We tried several spots and were genuinely surprised by how good and budget-friendly it was.

You might also want to check out Smartfish, a popular fish restaurant featured in Street Food Asia. We didn’t get the chance to try it ourselves, but it’s one option worth considering if you’re curious about famous local food.

Staying in Chiayi also gave us time to explore the city itself. Instead of rushing from one attraction to another, we enjoyed visiting local spots, walking around cultural areas, and experiencing everyday life in Chiayi. Something you’ll likely miss if you stay only in Alishan.

🗓️ Day 1 – Arrival + Chiayi City (Half Day)

Day 1 is intentionally kept light. Since this is usually an arrival day, the goal is to settle in, explore nearby spots, and enjoy Chiayi’s food scene without rushing.

🏨 Hotel Check-in (Near TRA Station)

After arriving in Chiayi, we checked in at Country Garden Hotel, which is conveniently located near the TRA station. Staying close to the station made getting around the city easy and was especially helpful for our early start to Alishan the next day.

The location is ideal if you’re:

• Arriving by train

• Planning a DIY Alishan day trip

• Looking for food options within walking distance

After dropping our bags and taking a short break, we headed out to start exploring Chiayi.

🌲 Hinoki Village

Our first stop was Hinoki Village, a beautifully preserved Japanese-era village known for its wooden houses and relaxed atmosphere. It’s easy to explore on foot and a great place for casual walks, photos, and browsing souvenir shops.

Aside from the traditional wooden buildings, you’ll also find cute spots featuring Ghibli characters, including My Neighbor Totoro. These are perfect photo spots, especially if you’re a Studio Ghibli fan or just want fun, Instagram-worthy shots to start your trip.

This is a great first-day stop because:

• It’s not too big or tiring

• Easy to pair with nearby attractions

• Great for photos and a relaxed stroll

🌳 Optional: Sleeping Forest

Just a short walk from Hinoki Village, Sleeping Forest is a small and simple park featuring a few sleeping animal statues. It’s not a major attraction, so don’t expect too much. But if you’re already nearby, it’s a nice place to slow down, enjoy a moment of silence, and take a few photos before heading to your next stop.

🍢 Dinner at Wenhua Road Night Market

In the evening, we headed to Wenhua Road Night Market for dinner. This is one of Chiayi’s most popular night markets and a great place to try local street food and explore the area at a relaxed pace.

Some of the foods we personally loved here include:

• Fried squid – crispy and flavorful, perfect as a quick snack

• Takoyaki – with full octopus tentacles inside, not the tiny bits

• Chicken poppers – crunchy, juicy, and easy to eat while walking

• …and plenty more stalls worth checking out

Aside from food, this night market also has small clothing stalls, including items for colder weather like ear muffs, gloves, and jackets. If you’re heading to Alishan the next day and realize you’re not fully prepared, this is a convenient place to buy last-minute essentials. We actually ended up buying ear muffs here, which came in handy for the cooler mountain temperatures.

Overall, Wenhua Road Night Market is a great mix of food, shopping, and local atmosphere, making it the perfect way to end your first night in Chiayi.

🗓️ Day 2 – Alishan Day Trip from Chiayi (Full Day)

Day 2 is dedicated to a DIY day trip to Alishan, with Chiayi as our base. Instead of staying overnight in the mountains, we traveled to Alishan for the day and returned to Chiayi in the evening.

We left Chiayi early in the morning to make the most of the day and spent our time exploring Alishan’s forest trails, scenic spots, and cooler mountain environment. This itinerary focuses on Alishan’s daytime highlights, making it ideal for travelers who prefer a flexible and budget-friendly setup.

After a full day in Alishan, we returned to Chiayi in the late afternoon to early evening.

🍚 Dinner Near TRA Station (Turkey Rice)

Back in Chiayi, we had dinner near the TRA station at 嘉義車頭火雞肉飯（永香珍食堂）. Turkey Rice is a local specialty and the perfect meal after a long day. It is simple, flavorful, and very affordable.

We ended the day by heading back to our hotel to rest and recharge after a full but rewarding Alishan trip.

We chose Beginning Breakfast for our Day 3 breakfast because it’s a cozy café with affordable food and drinks, perfect for a relaxed morning. Aside from the comfortable atmosphere, we really enjoyed their Taiwanese breakfast pancakes, which were simple, filling, and delicious.

The coffee here is good, and one of the main reasons we picked this spot is that they open early, ideal if you want to eat before hotel checkout or catch an early train. It’s also conveniently located near our hotel, making it an easy and stress-free choice for the last day of the trip.

🎨 Visit Chiayi Art Museum

The Chiayi Art Museum is relatively small, so you can easily explore it in about an hour, depending on your pace. It’s an ideal stop for the last day since it won’t take up too much time or energy.

What we really liked about this museum is the interior design, the warm wood elements and clean layout make it a great spot for photos, even if you’re just doing a quick visit. Its location near the TRA station also makes it convenient to fit in before hotel checkout or onward travel.

After exploring the museum, we headed back to the hotel for checkout and continued our journey to the next destination. Ending the trip in Chiayi felt relaxed and well-paced, without the stress of squeezing in too many activities.

🏨 Where We Stayed

We stayed at Country Garden Hotel, located near the TRA station, and this location turned out to be very convenient for our route.

We traveled from Kaohsiung to Chiayi by TRA, and staying near the station made the transfer effortless. We simply got off at Chiayi TRA Station and walked to the hotel. The same convenience applied when we continued our trip to Taichung, as we also boarded the TRA directly from this station.

Staying near the TRA station helped us:

• Transfer smoothly between cities

• Start early for our Alishan day trip

• Return easily after a long day

• Keep both arrival and departure days stress-free

For travelers moving between cities by train, this area is one of the most practical places to stay in Chiayi.

🏨 Other Areas You Can Consider

Aside from staying near the TRA station, here are a few other areas in Chiayi you can consider, depending on your travel style.

• Near Chiayi HSR Station
  Staying near the HSR station is very convenient if you’re traveling intercity via High-Speed Rail, especially when coming from or heading to major cities like Taipei, Taichung, or Kaohsiung. Hotels in this area are good if your priority is fast intercity transfers.

  However, there is a downside if Alishan is part of your itinerary. The earliest bus from Chiayi HSR Station to Alishan usually departs around 8:20 AM, which is not ideal if you want to travel to Alishan earlier or maximize your time in the mountains.

• City center areas
  Good for food, cafés, and casual exploring, but may require extra travel time if you plan to go to Alishan early in the morning.

• Near night markets
  Convenient for evening food trips, though you’ll need to factor in transport time for early departures.

If Alishan is included in your itinerary, stay near the Chiayi TRA station. It’s the most practical choice and fits perfectly with a 3 Days 2 Nights Chiayi itinerary that includes both city exploration and a mountain day trip.
